   Course Outline

This 2 day course of 15 hours runs over 2 days taught by Paul Robin FAcS MPCHM MCAA Head of The College of Chinese Medicine TCM Faculty.

This is a unique course combining authentic Traditional Chinese Acupuncture Needling Techniques with an explanation of correct usage of reinforcing and reducing needling manipulations and advanced applications of Spinal Acupuncture Therapy.

Spinal or Para Vertebral Acupuncture is an effective Acupuncture Therapy which uses the central nervous system to treat the whole body, it can be used in two different ways. When needles are inserted in reducing direction they have an inhibiting effect on the nervous system which utilises its connections through the deep and superficial nerves, and the activation of an immune system response to the invasion of the body by needles. This has the effect of promoting phagocytes to reduce inflammation and nerve inhibition to ease hypersensitivity, pain and muscular spasm and ache.

When needles are inserted in the reinforcing direction they produce a strengthening effect on the nerves, increasing muscle tone, promoting blood circulation and warming the extremities. This nerve inducement also activates and strengthens the functioning of the internal and hollow organs and body resistance.

Specific spinal nerves control specific internal and hollow organs, which can be regulated to bring about comprehensive changes to the whole bodys internal harmony producing a sense of wellbeing and relief or cure of a variety of symptoms and conditions.

 

Advanced Needle Manipulation
Rotating and Twisting combined with Lifting and Thrusting

As well as inserting the needles in the reinforcing or the reducing direction to increase or reduce the activity in the body, we can also further enhance the benefit to the patient by incorporating advanced needle manipulation.

The most commonly used manipulation for both reinforcing and reducing is the combined rotating and twisting with lifting thrusting manipulation. Needles are made to rotate continuously as it is lifted up and down through 3 stages rather like the action of a hammer drill.
The main advantage of this traditional needle manipulation over modern quick acupuncture techniques is that quick techniques tend to entangle the needle in the muscle fibres therefore only achieving one arrival of Qi per quick twist. Combined rotating and twisting with lifting and thrusting actually frees entanglement to allow for a continuous prolonged and controlled Qi manipulation, resulting in waves of Qi being produced to increase the stimulation effect and healing outcome. It also allows the practitioner to relax the tension between the spinal joints and achieve deeper insertion of needles.

History of Hua Tuos Para Vertebral Acupuncture

Para Vertebral Acupuncture has been known and practiced for many centuries and possible over millennia, many Acupuncture charts and books refer to the Para Vertebral Points without much explanation or detail.

Their discovery is attributed to the legendary Ancient Chinese physician Hua Tuo who lived and practiced between the 1st and 2nd century AD

Hua Tuo was famous for his simple, concise and effective form of Acupuncture and his early operations which were undertaken using herbal anaesthetics he is considered amongst Daoists as Shenyi  ("divine doctor") and is worshipped as a medicinal god or immortal in many Daoist temples.

The set of 34 paravertebral points we use in spinal acupuncture were named the "Hua Tuo Jiaji" in his honour by the ancient Chinese scholars.

Paul Robins background in this therapy

Paul's teacher Bernard Kai Lam Lee was an experienced and dedicated Chinese TCM Doctor. He developed Spinal Acupuncture from merely being used to influence the spinal nerves for the treatment of referred pain emanating from spinal joints, ligament injuries and paralysis. To an efficient Acupuncture Therapy which can treat and assists in the control and regulation and harmonisation of whole body, and regulating organ and bowel function through inducing or inhibiting spinal nerve signals.
Paul spent 9 fascinating years studying, practising and teaching with Dr lee, he was his apprentice at the time that Bernard Lee was developing this technique, Paul thus matured as a practitioner using spinal acupuncture early on in his career.
Paul has been practising and teaching TCM for 20 years and has found Spinal Acupuncture to be a reliable and outstanding form of treatment which can exceed the outcomes of standard Traditional Acupuncture with excellent results treating and improving the following conditions;

  2 Day Course Content

Lecture One

Morning   
Qi Gong breathing and reducing needle technique development
Explanation of internal health usage and practical needling for internal health conditions practicing combinations for various internal health conditions

Afternoon   
Exact location and correct needle insertion to midline spine and Para Vertebral Points with explanation of practical usage of reduction (nerve inhibition) technique. Students will practice insertion and manipulation on each other


 
Lecture Two

Morning   
Qi Gong breathing and reinforcing needle technique development

Afternoon   
practical needling of Para Vertebral points (nerve induction method) and explanation of reinforcing

Developing speed accuracy and theoretical and practical competence sage
Examination and assessment

Each of these days are from 9.30 till 5.30 with a one hour lunch break

All students must agree to give and receive Acupuncture to each other during course

Classes will be a maximum of eight students

Theoretical and practical examination is done by continuous assessment.

Graduates are entitled to join the Acupuncture Society as Spinal Acupuncture members,

and may use the initials MAcS SpA after their names if they join the Society and adhere to its code of ethics rules and regulations and supply copies of their insurance.

Acupuncture Society members are exempted from Local Authority Licensing in many areas including Greater London please check with your local authority.

Paul Robin has been teaching and practicing Traditional Chinese medicine for over 20 years. He was trained in the Fook Sang style by Dr Ac Bernard Kai Lam Lee (who was a TCM specialist brought over from China by the British Acupuncture Association) and qualified in 1987. Paul was Dr Lees full time apprentice and assistant for 9 years during which time he conducted research and lectured at the Fook Sang courses held at Imperial College and was President of the Fook Sang Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Practitioners Association.

In 1994 Paul founded the College of Chinese Medicine and some years later founded the Acupuncture Society in order to establish Chinese style Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in the UK.

Paul specializes in Spinal, Traditional and Chinese Medical Style Deep Needling Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Diagnosis and complex Chinese Herbal formulations.

He represents the Acupuncture Society in the Acupuncture Stakeholders Group which is working with leading members of the profession toward the future regulation of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine and preparing for the professions inclusion into the NHS.

Paul lectures at the College of Chinese Medicine and is also a specialist TCM consultant at the Clinic of the College of Chinese Medicine in Harley Street.

The College of Chinese Medicine

The College of Chinese Medicine has been running Professional Training courses in TCM since 1992.  CCM courses are accredited by the Acupuncture Society and Graduates are entitled to inclusion on the Acupuncture Societies Professional Register and can log the hours studied as annual CPD credits.
