Letter to Portsmouth University Re: Ex-LCTA Students

Thank you for including us in your list of potential providers which will be sent to students of LCTA.

The College of Chinese Medicine was established in 1992 and has been running degree level and applied TCM courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level since, we also have experience in running a 3 year degree level Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal course.

We have expertise in the teaching of Chinese Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Diagnosis and Theory. Our clinically based Acupuncture training includes Holistic, Orthopaedic, and Cosmetic, Spinal Para vertebral and Auricular forms.

The TCM theory taught in the LCTA is consistent with most TCM colleges in China and the UK and so would be easy for our college to assimilate them.

We also teach Qi Gong, Acupressure, Korean Hand Acupuncture, Tui Na and Auricular Acupuncture for Musculoskeletal conditions which can be added as post graduate professional development training and priced according to our website fees, although an introduction module for the latter is included in the early 3rd year proposal.

Our one and two year Chinese Herbal Course focuses on individual herb knowledge to enable prescription of herbal formulae based on a combination of TCM theory including Pulse Face and Tongue assessments and modern western medical concepts.

We do not advocate the use of Chinese patent remedies as we have always considered that they are inappropriate without constant modification and diagnostic re assessment, consequently the new EU legislation coming into force in April 2011 does not affect our style or ability to legally practice.

We offer degree level and applied professional training Diploma’s and CPD Certificates, our courses are accredited by the Acupuncture Society who are active members of the ASG and Microsystems Acupuncture working groups. The Acupuncture Society has representation on the Profession Specific Board (PSB) of the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).

The college is not registered with the UK border agency under Tier 4 so unfortunately we would not be able to take the few non EU foreign nationals students on the course.

Our courses are mainly delivered at University of London, Cartwright Gardens, Camden (near Euston Station) and some of the clinical training will be in East Finchley not far from LCTA.

The cost of the courses would vary depending on whether the applicants are first year, second year or early/late third year students and what each group would require from us and how many there are.  We are flexible to tailor our courses appropriately and fairly to each group of applicants.

We suggest the 1st and 2nd year group join our existing 2 year degree level Acupuncture and Herbal course (they can elect to cover Acupuncture only if they wish) and can be taken on at short notice as the course is modular only requiring completion of all modules, advanced 2nd year students may be able to join into the 2nd year subject to assessment and number of applicants.

This course is composed of 24 Combined clinical and theory based classes per year, run on 1 weekend a month bases at a cost of £2500 per annum.  Students are expected to study essentials of course content at home and are assessed on a monthly basis.

This course is very practical and clinically based and students will be actively involved in real treatments from the start, as experience has shown us that this is the best way for them to attain confidence and good understanding in the administration of the treatments.

For the early 3rd year students we are of course flexible and can tailor directly to their needs, but have put forward the following according to what we understand as the requirement of their existing LCTA course.

Based on 34 clinical teaching days including 3 days of Practitioner development, we propose the following modules; students will practice on each other and on patients at the teaching clinic at a cost of £3200 all inclusive
